Jane Horrocks: ‘Am we happy? we don’t consider so, no. Sorry’

I’m a happier chairman when I’m creation people laugh. It’s always good to do comedy, since you’re fortifying people. we go in phases where we finish adult doing a lot of doom and dejection and afterwards a lot of comedy. we get fed adult of one and go behind to a other. But comedy creates me feel a lot better, psychologically. If you’re creation people laugh, it’s much, most nicer than creation people cry.

I was rebellious as a teenager. we was of a post-punk era, new romantic, where people did dress strangely, to provoke their parents. It’s really formidable now for a younger generation. There’s really small to rail against, since relatives go: “We like that, too! We like festivals! We wish to go with you!”

I feel like I’m done with Bubble [her impression in Absolutely Fabulous]. Pratfalls feel a bit like something we did in my 20s and 30s. It doesn’t utterly lay as comfortably, now I’m of an comparison age.

I’d have seen myself as a revolutionary when we was younger, though I’m indifferent to politics now. we got into it when we was doing Life Is Sweet, since my impression was so anti-Thatcher. we went to Socialist Worker meetings.

My son is 21 and my daughter’s 19. My biggest pleasure is that my children don’t do what we do, and they don’t do what my partner does. That is a good accolade.

My partner is a author and an actor. we consider maybe if we were with somebody who wasn’t connected in some approach with this business, afterwards it would be harder for them to know a world.

Joy Division were massive heroes of mine. Soft Cell, Human League, Gang of Four. we did this uncover during a Young Vic dual years ago [If You Kiss Me, Kiss Me] where we achieved a songs of Morrissey, Robert Smith, a Buzzcocks. Northern masculine bands, that’s who we love.

I don’t like seeing plays any more. After 10 minutes, I’ve got a point. we don’t need to lay by a rest of it. If there’s song in a uncover and afterwards it stops, we think: “Oooh, lift on with a song and stop talking.” Music is what does it for me.

People are astounded I’ve still got my accent. we am trustworthy to where I’m from. The strength of a Lancashire people is within me. You get on and do it. There are no front and graces. My family have never authorised me to get above my station.

Am we happy? we don’t consider so, no. Sorry. I’m still perplexing to find it. A few years ago, we was with my sister-in-law and my niece. My silent was going around a list saying: “What’s on your wishlist?” And we all pronounced what we wanted, though my niece said: “Nothing, we don’t wish for anything.” we thought, that’s a tip of happiness. Complete contentment.

Swimming with Men is in cinemas national from 6 July
