Bobby Freeman Jr. knows his approach around a courtroom — and a engineer dusk purse.
When he’s not given justice as an Orleans Parish prosecutor, a Plaquemine local is branch lush silk fabrics, mink and other outlandish materials into couture dusk bags, that are now being carried during a Moreau-Reyes Gallery in Baton Rouge.
“I was always meddlesome in art, though it was healthy that we gravitated towards a law,” says Freeman, son of Marianne Freeman, of Plaquemine, and a late Bobby Freeman, who served as major administrator from 1980 to 1988, a state deputy from 1968 to 1980 and Plaquemine city decider from 1990 to 1996. “I get my artistic eye from my father … my biggest critics are my mom and sister Lisa.”
But, initial came a law.
After graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in 1988 and creation a Law Review, Freeman changed to Los Angeles, where he spent a year as a authorised consultant for Paramount Pictures’ radio division, ensuring correctness when scripts associated to Louisiana polite and rapist law.
He returned to Louisiana in 1991 to work during a 4th Circuit Court of Appeal and, in 1993, he took a prosecutor’s pursuit during a Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office underneath longtime District Attorney Harry Connick Sr. For 6 years, Freeman prosecuted sex crimes and murders. Then he strike a wall. It was time for something different.
Then came design.
Deciding to totally change careers, he practical to a Parsons School of Design in New York and was supposed a week later.
“I had no place to live. we only headed to New York,” Freeman says with a giggle of his 1999 move. “I finished in dual years and finished a dean’s list with a 4.0.”
He went to work as an novice with engineer Marc Jacobs.
“I schooled an implausible volume operative with him,” Freeman says. “It was fantastic.”
Then came an 18-month army with engineer Tommy Hilfiger.
“I worked with a accumulation of designers who showed in Bryant Park (New York Fashion Week),” Freeman says. “Then we got a pursuit as a partner costumer for Elton John and toured with him. we remember articulate to Elton during a private unison he did. He asked me where we was from. When we told him Baton Rouge, he got all vehement and pronounced Baton Rouge had some of a many superb women in a world. we also did a Face to Face debate with Billy Joel.”
Soon Parsons came calling, seeking Freeman to emanate and learn a march on a Business of Design.
“I got to marry my dual passions — pattern and law,” Freeman says. “I don’t consider we have to be pigeon-holed in your career. If we have a event to do something, do it. we have a far-reaching area of interests. we get to use both a right side and left side of my brain.”
In 2001, during a propelling of friends, Freeman started his possess pattern association in Manhattan. His couture dusk bags, that operation in cost from $1,050 to $1,800, were a hit. Some are one-of-a-kind, though there are never some-more than 3 finished alike.
“I get impulse from wherever I’ve traveled,” Freeman says. “It’s extraordinary what will strike we when we slightest design it.”
One collection is formed on a toolbox. A outing to Venice evoked a collection finished from superb Fortuny silks while Barcelona’s Sagrada Família, a world’s largest unprepared Catholic church, desirous a hardware.
In 2004, Freeman was carrying cooking with former associate Orleans Parish prosecutor Keva Landrum and she asked either he was prepared to lapse to a District Attorney’s office. He was.
“When we initial came behind we was focusing on a law, though afterwards André (Moreau) called and pronounced he wanted to underline my bags during his gallery,” Freeman says. “I had my sourcing all set adult in New York and my patterns done, so we was means to make that happen.”
